Balasore

Balasore, is the economic and cultural hub of Northern Odisha. During the British regime, Balasore came under the purview of the Bengal Presidency. It came back to being an integral part of Odisha formally when the state was created on 1st April 1936.

About

History

The history of Balasore mirrors that of Odisha. The region fell into turbulent times from 1568 with the death of the last King of Odisha Mukunda Deva. Thereafter the region was annexed by the Mughals, the Marathas and finally the British. The interesting about Balasore is that the region witnessed the first settlement of Britishers as early as 1634, followed by the Dutch and the Danes. The remnants of its European past can still be found in the city.

The getaways from Balasore are as diverse as the culture of the land. You can get lost in the wilderness of the ecotourism’s destinations, or wade in the calmness of the rivers and seas. You can deep dive into faith and spirituality or immerse yourself in rocket science. The land has it all.

KhirachoraGopinath Temple

KhirachoraGopinath Temple

The mystic temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. According to popular legend, the deity of Gopinath was found by King LangulaNarasimha Deva who was on a pilgrimage and was installed at Remuna by the King between 1238 AD and 1264 AD.The temple derives its name from the folklore that revered Saint Madhavendra Puri during his visit to the temple got enamored by the kheer (sweetend milk) served to the Lord and had the urge to taste it, but being a saint he reconciled. Lord Krishna appeared in the dream of the temple priest and said he had hidden a pot of kheer and ordered it to be served to his beloved devotee Saint Madhavendra Puri. The name KshirachoraGopinath (lord who stole the kheer) stuck and the temple came to be known as thus.
